Here at Pottering About we specialize in Tropical and Subtropical plants. That can be grown out side in many gardens in New Zealand. In particular Epiphytes and Lithophytes.
Over the years we have found many plants that can be grown successfully in our garden here in Otakiri: including,Bromeliads,Orchids,Epiphyllums,Hoyas, Ceropegias, and Ferns Also Palms and Aloes
And have built up a clientele who enjoy growing their plants vertically, some just on a frame or trellis, others with extensive gardens.
Rule of thumb any tree that will host ferns or lichens will host Epiphyte's. What we look for are trees with an open canopy with good air movement threw them.
If you can grow a Stagg Horn fern. You can grow our plants
Some trees that we have found successful include: Palms, Macrocarpa, Silk, Melaleuca, Casuarina, Oak and Pungas.
The two most successful ways of attaching plants to trees, that we have found Is to either tie them on with stretchy tie. If they are not already on a mount If they are just nail or screw them on.
The best way to find out if it works for you! Is to experiment.
